Does a General Dentist Offer Teeth Straightening?
A general dentist does a little bit of everything, from preventative treatments to teeth straightening treatments. Appliances like braces and clear aligners are typically used to push teeth into a more favorable alignment.
Misaligned teeth affect how your smile looks and make it harder to keep teeth clean. Improperly aligned teeth might overlap one another, preventing the bristles of a toothbrush or dental floss from effectively cleaning their surfaces. According to our general dentist, this increases the risk of a person developing issues like gum disease and tooth decay.
How a general dentist straightens teeth
General dentists have many tools at their disposal when it comes to straightening teeth. Let us take a look at a few of the options that a dentist might recommend.
These metal appliances have been around for over a century and are still the most versatile devices used to straighten teeth. Braces have two main components: metal brackets that go on each tooth and wires that link all the brackets on a dental arch. Braces are not the most aesthetically pleasing oral devices used in dentistry, however.
Treatment times with braces are typically somewhere between 12 to 36 months. The device works by applying constant force on the patient’s teeth, slowly pushing them to a better alignment.
2. Ceramic braces
These are more aesthetically pleasing versions of conventional braces. The metal brackets are swapped with tooth-colored or transparent brackets, while the metal wires are replaced with transparent ones. Ceramic braces can be quite as effective as metal braces, but they are not as sturdy. They are ideal for anyone who needs braces to correct their teeth alignment issues but wants something less visible than traditional braces.
3. Clear aligners
Clear aligners provide the most discreet way to straighten teeth. It involves wearing multiple sets of aligner trays over the course of treatment. These sets work as a relay team, with each set being used for about two weeks before being replaced with the next set that takes over and pushes the patient’s teeth closer to the target alignment.
The aligner trays used are removable, so they do not interfere with oral hygiene or meals. This is a huge benefit over braces, which tend to get in the way of meals or dental hygiene. Clear aligners need to be worn for at least 20 hours a day for the treatment to be effective.
Extractions are sometimes used to create space on a patient’s jaw so their remaining teeth can be pushed to a better alignment.
